The
drovers had to overcome the problem of the long journey when the hungry cattle
needed sufficient quantities of food to sustain them throughout their journey. As
a solution, they had to rely on the food that could be found along the way. The
drovers also had to ride ahead on horseback to control the cattle from spread
out over considerable distances. To avoid the drovers from paid for any damage
that the cattle had done, they had to be careful so that the cattle did not
stray into private land to feed. Furthermore, the drover has to cope with bands
of robbers who might violently attack him for his money or drive off some of
his cattle. They also had to have an intimate knowledge of the temperament of
his animals. Besides, the cattle must not be overdrive so that they can reach
their market in prime condition and the drovers can get the best prices from
the butcher.
