Kevin

Based on the story "Kevin" written by Catherine Lim, I can see the imbalance relationship between Kevin and her mother where her mother mostly dominated the relationship. She is a fierce, perfectionist  and unreasonable kind of mother. At the other side, Kevin is an obedient and passive boy although he is a very smart student. Things were going so complicated for Kevin when he had to study really hard to achieve 95 percent marks or more in every test he sat in order to satisfy his mother. To make the situation worse, Kevin felt so stress and fed up with his mother when she always nagged at him and even warned him to do his best or else he will get punishment such as twisting of the ears, a caning on the legs and buttocks and a withdrawal of permission to watch TV or to go to a cinema for a month.

Furthermore, when Kevin got the high marks, his mother never fulfilled his dream and just brought anything that she thought was good for him. Pity Kevin when his mother brought him a pair of sneakers eventhough he asked for a pair of football boots to go and play football with Boon Kee. Her mother also controlled his friends by not letting him be friend with Boon Kee because in her opinion, he can gave him bad influence. One thing that made me amazed with his mother's behaviour was how she managed to keep a file full of Kevin's marked exercises and tests.

I know that Kevin's mother wanted the best from him since he is her only son in this world but from my point of view, the way she acted was quite troublesome and only bringing deterioration in a long term for Kevin. Can you imagine what kind of person Kevin will be if he was treated like that along his teenager years? Kevin will probably becomes one of the persons who are dependable and can't make a right decision in his future life because we can see in this story that her mother always decided anything for him. In addition, Kevin will also become an antisocial and unskillful person in the communication techniques if he follows her choosy mother's rules on how to choose a friend.

No matter how bad your mother is, at the end of the day, she still the only mother you have in this world. Eventhough Kevin's mother treated him not the way he wanted but I think that Kevin and his mother should speak up from heart to heart and try to solve the problems tolerantly despite their differences in opinion and behaviour. They should appreciate each other more and at the end of the story, Kevin also should pray for his mother's healthy. In a nutshell, this story is worthy to read as it remind us about our parents and how we should treat them well.

A young boy said to his mother, "How old were you when I was born?"
His mother replied, "23."
"Wow, that's a lot of time we missed spending together."
